by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

Seniors looking for love and companionship, pay attention. This is your chance to take a shot at love and friendship in your sunset years. The renowned Silver Inning Foundation, one of the country’s foremost entities working for senior citizens, is hosting its 2nd ‘Jeevan Saathi Sammelan’, a matchmaking event for marriage and live-in relationships.

All you have to do is register for the event beforehand and show up at the venue in Mumbai on December 13, 2015. The event will be held at 10 am at Dadar Cultural Centre. To register, fill out the form online (http://theseniorcitizen.in/register-here/) and send it to Silver Inning Foundation (look for address and details below).

The event is aimed at helping widowed, divorced and single men and women over 50 years of age seek love and companionship in their senior years. “We must break away from the old tradition of frowning upon our elders seeking love, and seek a new tradition of encouraging them to seek friendship and love at their age. In their advanced years, it is important for them to have a partner to share their lives with,” explains Silver Inning Foundation’s Sailesh Mishra.

The last such Sammelan, also held in Mumbai two years ago, received a staggering response with over 350 people showing up to look for partners. This time, the Foundation hopes that more people will arrive. The Metrognome is the online partner for the event.

Call 9833344359 / 8879924359 (Monday to Saturday 11 am to 5 pm) for details, or email silverinnings@gmail.com. Send the completed registration form to Silver Innings, J/47-48, Shop no. 10, opp. Navgraha Bldg, Lane behind Allahabad Bank, Poonam Sagar Complex, Mira Road (East), Mumbai – 401107.

Wedding season nears for senior citizens

The wedding season is upon us. Senior citizens, too, will get a shot at wedded bliss in a December event.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

It is every person’s dream to find the right partner and settle down in matrimonial bliss. If we cannot find true love, our parents do the job for us! But what happens to those who are in the autumn of their lives? If they are alone and in need of a companion, where can they go find one?

Sailesh Mishra

This is where excellent events such as an upcoming ‘wedding and companionship mela’ for seniors comes in. Hosted by Rotary Club of Mumbai, Nariman Point and The Metrognome’s content partners Silver Inning Foundation, the ‘Jeevan Saathi Sammelan’ is being held to encourage single seniors to find a partner for marriage or for a live-in relationship.

Singles will be encouraged to find a suitable partner and initiate a relationship on the spot. “They can meet at the venue, exchange contact details if they think they want to take things forward. It is up to them to get married in the future, or have a live-in relationship. We are also encouraging people to come find a companion at the Sammelan. Many people come seeking constant companions, not a romantic relationship,” explains Silver Inning founder Sailesh Mishra.

Silver Innings had hosted a similar event in 2013, to stupendous success. “We had people coming from interior parts of Maharashtra, and there was a huge crowd at the gates. We insist on a proper registration process and the application form is pretty detailed. Applicants must also give supporting documents when they mention their status: divorcees must submit a copy of the divorce certificate, for example,” Sailesh says.

His learning from the previous event was that women participants are more careful about choosing their prospective partner, and that they look for financial security. “The women mostly wanted marriage, while the men wanted live-in relationships,” Sailesh says.

The Sammelan will be held on December 13, 2015 at Dadar. Watch this space for more details on how to register.

Seniors rock the stage at Umang 2015

Our social initiatives partner Silver Inning Foundation and Rotary Club, Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College host awesome seniors talent show.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

Who says senior citizens are just supposed to put their feet up and watch the world go by?

The Metrognome’s social initiatives partner, Silver Inning Foundation put up a breathtaking senior citizens talent show, Umang 2015, at Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha, recently to a packed house and some extremely talented acts. The show’s partners included Rotary Club of Mumbai, Nariman Point, Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College.

UmangUmang is a unique stage talent show for senior citizens over 55 years of age. This year, the event was included under the Umang Rotary District 3140 Service week.

Said Sailesh Mishra, Founder President of Silver Inning Foundation, “As there are not enough opportunities for the elderly to show their talent, the main purpose of this programme is to provide a platform for them. This is not a competition between the elderly, but a forum to encourage them to demonstrate their hidden talent. We are the pioneers in the country to annually organise this unique talent show for seniors since 2008. Every senior citizen is invited to participate without affiliation to any organisation, community, class, or caste.”

Over time, the fast pace of our lives and changing traditions have dampened the spirits of senior citizens by suggesting that they can no longer contribute to society and benefit from being active. “But we don’t accept this reasoning for our elderly parents, friends, or neighbours. We can help them maximise their health and vitality by keeping them active and involved in the world around them,” Sailesh says.

Vipul Shah of Rotary Club of Mumbai, Nariman Point said, “It was magical to see vibrant and evergreen seniors performing in as many as 27 acts. They were agedUmang from  55 years to 81 years, and they sang, danced, enacted social plays, performed music. The saying ‘Bachpan after pachhpan’ is apt for such a show.”

Siddharth Jaiswal, President, Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College said, “It was one of the biggest-ever talent shows of senior citizens all over Maharashtra. Seniors wait for this event every year. The hall was packed with 1,000 elders in the audience, as also young volunteers from the Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College, TISS, Sophia College and Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work.”

The show saw participation from 126 seniors and 20 senior citizens organisations. The associate partners for the show were Dignity Foundation, FESCOM Mumbai, HelpAge India, Harmony for Silvers Foundation, 1298 Senior Citizens Helpline, A1 Snehanjali, The Metrognome and Palliative Care Department, Bhaktivedanta Hospital. The show was co-hosted by Rotary Club of Bombay Pier.

Enter this talent show for the elderly

Umang fest comes back with a bang, announces a talent contest for senior citizens to be held in January 2015.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

We are heartened to see several initiatives – however small – being planned for and involving senior citizens in the city. This is one group of people that require recognition and applause in its autumn years, and any initiative that celebrates them should be roundly welcomed.

In this spirit of things, the Rotary Club of Mumbai Nariman Point and Rotaract Club of Rizvi Law College are coming up with ‘UMANG 2014-15 ‘, a talent show for senior citizens, on January 24, 2015. This is an annual talent show conceptualised and executed by Silver Innings Foundation since 2008, for seniors aged 55 years and above. The programme will be part of the Rotary District 3140 Service Week from January 23 to 29, 2015.

“We have been organising this programme since 2008,” says Sailesh Mishra of Silver Innings. “As there are not enough opportunities for the elderly to show their talent, the main purpose of this programme is to provide a platform for the elderly to display their talents. This is not a competition between the elderly, but a forum to encourage them to demonstrate their hidden talent.” The event is supported by Dignity Foundation, FESCOM Mumbai, HelpAge India, Harmony for Silvers Foundation, 1298 Senior Citizens Helpline, and The Metrognome.

Umang invites entries in one-act play, singing, a solo of group musical or dance performance, skit, mimicry, drama, or any other talent which can be presented on a stage. “We are restricting the number of acts to not more than 25,” Sailesh says, adding that the organisers are currently ‘auditioning’ potential participants over the Internet (via YouTube video links of their performance). The talent show will be held at Birla Matoshree Sabhagriha, New Marine Lines, on January 24, 2015 from 10 am to 12.30 pm.

Seniors march for elder abuse awareness

As reports of abuse against elders in India surface, a walkathon organised in Borivali helps spread awareness about the issue.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

A recent report by HelpAge India painted an extremely grim picture of the state of senior citizens in the country – at an age when they should be enjoying their autumn years, as many as 50 per cent seniors (of those surveyed) complained of abuse from their families. A surprising finding was that apart from daughters-in-law and sons being perpetrators of abuse, even daughters were found to inflict mental and physical abuse on the elderly.

Elder abuse day walkathonThe report was released to coincide with the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is observed on June 15 every year. To mark the occasion in their own small way, Silver Innings Foundation organised a walkathon comprising both seniors and youth at Borivali. The walkathon was flagged off from Dada Dadi Park in Veer Savarkar Udyan, near St Anne’s School.

“On the eve of the 9th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2014 , Silver Innings  Helpline, a project of Silver Innings, in association with INPEA and Pushpa Maa Foundation, organised  a walkathon observing Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 14,” said Sailesh Mishra, founder President of Silver Innings. “Around 230 senior citizens and 30 youngsters participated for the 20-minute walkathon with banners and placards,” he added. The programme also included the singing of inspirational songs and the tying of purple bands among the youth and seniors.

Mumbai kickstarts India’s first senior citizens helpline

Silver Innings starts a referral helpline portal to provide information on all things that matter to senior citizens in Maharashtra.
by The Editors | editor@themetrognome.in

It is fast becoming a cause of concern – a burgeoning elderly population in India and very little senior citizen-centric infrastructure. But there is hope yet, as senior citizens can now get access to a host of services through a unique helpline.

SI helplineLaunched in Mumbai on February 16, 2014, www.silverinningshelpline.com will provide comprehensive information to senior citizens and their family members. “It’s our way of creating a ‘super market website’ where elders can get information and get themselves connected to everything they need to lead a happy and contented life in their silver years,” says Sailesh Mishra, President of Silver Innings, which is working in the field of elder care since 2008.

Launched with information primarily aimed at Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune, the helpline will carry contact information for emergency numbers, medical and fitness help, legal and financial assistance, special needs (such as support group bureaus) and social needs (such as clubs, tour operators, etc.)

The helpline is a joint effort between Sailesh, Ramaa Subramaniam, co-founder of Silver Innings and Dhanalaxmi Rao, Project Manager and experienced gerontologist. “We call upon elder products manufacturers and distributors, as also service providers to register with us to reach a target audience of 50+ years,” says Sailesh.
