Mumbai is counting its trees

IT based census of trees recently included Governor’s residence, Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, which has about 3,000 trees of Mumbai’s 19 lakh trees.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is currently on a tree-counting spree all over Mumbai. Recently, the exercise was carried out at the Governor’s official residence in Mumbai, the Raj Bhavan.

The IT-based census of trees in the Raj Bhavan took place on Friday; it turns out Raj Bhavan has 3,000 trees. Additional Municipal Commissioner SVR Srinivas (in pic above) is in charge of the project.

The Tree Census has been undertaken by the BMC for the first time, carrying out the exercise using IT. The process involves GPS-based tracking and GIS mapping of trees. The earlier census was conducted in 2008, but manually. Then, the tree count in Mumbai was 19 lakh.

According to the information provided by the BMC, the tree census using GIS and GPS-based paperless exercise involves physical survey and recording of individual trees in the defined area with relevant details such as spatial location, botanical name, common name, girth, height, canopy diameter, canopy type, condition (healthy, average, poor), family/genus, phenology, economic importance (medicinal, ornamental, fruiting), flowering season, colour of flower, carbon sequestration potential, etc are collected.

The exercise is scheduled to conclude in a couple of months. As per figures from the 2008 tree census, Bhandup has the most number of trees in Mumbai (1.59 lakh), with Andheri East coming in second (1.56 lakh trees) and Borivali coming in third (1.44 lakh trees). Chandanwadi has the lowest green cover, at just 3,919 trees.

Maharashtra universities step up for Kashmir

Universities of Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nanded and SNDT have jointly raised Rs 96 lakh for Kashmir relief, rescue efforts.

The country has already stepped up to generously contribute for the recent tragedy in Kashmir. But the State of Maharashtra’s universities have collectively raised a little under Rs 1 crore.

The Vice Chancellors of Pune, Kolhapur, Aurangabad and Nanded Universities met the Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of Universities in the State, Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan yesterday, October 8, and presented to him separate cheques aggregating Rs 61.78 lakh. The cheques were addressed to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of persons affected by the floods in Jammu and Kashmir. The Governor welcomed the gesture of the Universities and sent the cheques to the Prime Minister’s office.

While Dr Wasudeo Gade, Vice Chancellor of the Savitribai Phule University of Pune presented a cheque of Rs 30 lakh for the PM’s Relief Fund, Dr BA Chopade, Vice Chancellor of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University gave a cheque of Rs 15 lakh. The Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Prof Dr NJ Pawar gave a cheque of Rs 10 lakh for the PM’s Relief Fund, while the Vice Chancellor of the Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Dr Pandit Vidyasagar, gave a sum of Rs 6.78 lakh as contribution of the University’s staff towards the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

Previously, the University of Mumbai had given Rs 25 lakh and the SNDT University had donated Rs 10 lakhs to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of persons affected by the floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

Registrations open for Mumbai Marathon 2015

The registration process for the Mumbai Marathon 2015 was formally launched at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, by the Maharashtra Governor.

The Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan today, Tuesday, July 22, formally launched the registration for the 12th Edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2015 at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. The Governor launched the registration process, with the symbolic signing of the first registration form.

Film star John Abraham, who is the Brand Ambassador of the Mumbai Marathon, Vivek Singh of Procam International, the organisers of the Marathon and representatives of various sponsor organisations were present on the occasion.

The 2015 Marathon is scheduled to be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015. It was started in the year 2004.

Governor receives 60 representations on Sanjay Dutt pardon

Individuals and organisations have written to the Maharashtra State Governor for or against a pardon for convicted actor Sanjay Dutt. 25 petitions oppose pardon.

While there’s been a bit of a brouhaha over whether actor Sanjay Dutt should be pardoned for his role in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Bombay, even as his jail stint of a little over three years comes up as decreed by the Supreme Court, the Governor of Maharashtra’s received and sent representations in the matter to the State Government for review.

As per a press release issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor K Sankaranarayanan’s official residence in Mumbai, the Governor has received and now sent 60 representations and petitions received by him from various individuals and organisations both seeking and opposing clemency for Sanjay Dutt. The petitions and representations have been sent for review to the State Home Department.

In a letter dated April 4, 2013 addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Maharashtra, Home Department, the Secretary to the Governor Vikas Chandra Rastogi has sent copies of all the representations received by the Governor during the last few days to the State Government.

The Governor had received representations on this issue from citizens and organisations from all parts of the country. These include those sent by Justice (retd) Markandeya Katju, Chairman, Press Council of India, and others. Earlier the Governor had sent the petition received from politicians Amar Singh and Jaya Prada, MP, to the State Home Department on March 28, 2013.

Interestingly, at least 25 individuals and organisations from out of the 60 petitioners have opposed pardon for Sanjay Dutt.

Maharashtra NCC cadets win PM’s banner for 16th time

They won for the fourth consecutive year at the Republic Day camp in Delhi recently; State Governor feted the cadets.

The Maharashtra Contingent of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) won the prestigious Prime Minister’s Banner for the fourth consecutive year at the Republic Day camp held in New Delhi recently. This win is the 16th for the Maharashtra NCC, a record on its own.

On Saturday, State Governor K Sankaranarayanan feted the victorious Corps at his official residence in Mumbai, the Raj Bhavan. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor congratulated the National Cadet Corps for shaping the character of the youth by inculcating in them discipline, patriotism and an urge for social service. He expressed the hope that the NCC would mould the character of several more youth in the country.

Maj General S Sengupta, Additional Director General of Maharashtra NCC, informed the gathering that the strength of the Maharashtra NCC is being increased from 1 lakh to 1.20 lakh cadets this year onwards. He also added that Maharashtra NCC has bagged the Champion Directorate Trophy for the 16th time during the last 22 years.

New stamp commemorates late Aditya Birla

State Governor released the stamp in the presence of the Birla family; slammed other family-run businesses for lack of ethics.

The Governor of Maharashtra, K Sankaranarayanan yesterday released a commemorative postage stamp on late industrialist Aditya Birla. The function was held at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, in the presence of other prominent Birla family members such as Kumarmangalam Birla, Neeraja Birla and Rajashree Birla, among others. The Post Master General of India was also present on the occasion.

In his speech, the Governor said, “Only five days ago, the Honourable President of India had released the commemorative stamp on late Shri Aditya Birla at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. I am happy that we are celebrating the occasion here in Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. Although belatedly, I am glad that we are honouring one of the greatest pioneering business leaders of India late Shri Aditya Vikram Birla in a befitting manner.”

However, while praising the late business icon, the Governor slammed other businesses in India. He said, “Unlike other family-owned businesses in India, the Birla Group definitely stands out as one of the most respected business groups for two reasons. The first and foremost reason is the association and involvement of the Birlas in India’s freedom struggle. The late Shri GD Birla (Aditya Birla’s grandfather) was a close confidante of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel and many others.

The second reason why the Birla Group is a respected name is because of the integration of ethics and values by the Birla Group with business. The name Birla at once inspires trust and confidence because of the adherence of the Group to these values.”

The Governor went on to extol the virtues of the late business leader, saying that he was “a silent business revolutionary who foresaw the winds of globalisation coming to India much before others. He was not one to blame the system for the unfavourable business atmosphere prevailing in those days. He worked his way out to put Indian business on the global level as early as in 1969. He went on to set up 19 companies outside India in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Egypt. The postage stamp is a just recognition of his formidable work for the Birla Group and for the nation at large.”
