Registrations open for Mumbai Marathon 2015

The registration process for the Mumbai Marathon 2015 was formally launched at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, by the Maharashtra Governor.

The Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan today, Tuesday, July 22, formally launched the registration for the 12th Edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2015 at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. The Governor launched the registration process, with the symbolic signing of the first registration form.

Film star John Abraham, who is the Brand Ambassador of the Mumbai Marathon, Vivek Singh of Procam International, the organisers of the Marathon and representatives of various sponsor organisations were present on the occasion.

The 2015 Marathon is scheduled to be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015. It was started in the year 2004.

RK Laxman, in an exhibition

Over 200 of the legendary cartoonist’s works are being displayed at Worli’s Nehru Centre Art Gallery till January 5, 2014.

Journalists and students of the profession will often remark on the role and importance of the political cartoonist in the newspaper’s overall scheme of things – and lament at the absence of the cartoonist in contemporary media.

Hence, it is heartening to visit an exhibition of works by India’s best-loved political cartoonist, RK Laxman. The exhibition, the 21st in the ‘Indian Master’s Retrospective’, was inaugurated by Maharashtra State Governor K Sankaranarayanan at the Worli-based Nehru Centre Art Gallery, and the works have been curated by the Gallery’s Assistant Director, Nina Rege. The showing includes over 200 cartoons, old and new, made by Laxman.

RK Laxman exhibitionSpeaking at the inauguration, the Governor said, “Few cartoonists have held forth such a long sway over readers as RK Laxman has done with his remarkable work, day after day and year after year for 60 long years. He has been a ‘people’s representative’ in the real sense of the term for all these years.  He gave face to the aam aadmi in our country. Through his cartoons, he has represented the silent millions of the country, voiced their real problems and raised their issues forcefully in the corridors of power.

“Very importantly, Shri Laxman has explained to the readers a range of complex political, national and international issues using his master strokes and a few simple lines. Personally, I rate the cartoonist a few notches higher than the Editor.”

The Governor exhorted the public to visit the exhibition as it “brings to light some of Shri Laxman’s best and yet less known works.  It has also brought out Laxman, the artist. His sketches of personalities and landscapes are outstanding and prove his brilliance as an artist.”

A new book,  Finely Exaggerated, will also be released during the exhibition period.

Marathi B.Ed syllabus for visually challenged in Maharashtra

The announcement was made on the All India Flag Day for the Blind; State Governor pledged support for all initiatives.

The National Association for the Blind (NAB), today organised the All India Flag Day for the Blind in Mumbai, and during the launch, Rameshwar Kalantari, President, NAB, announced that soon, B.Ed syllabus would be available for study in the Marathi language as well.

Kalantari said, “Every year, students who are visually challenged and who speak Marathi are forced to study for their B.Ed degree in English or Hindi, because textbooks and course material is not available in Marathi. This also deters a lot of visually challenged candidates from opting for B.Ed studies. A lot of students have been taking their degrees from other universities in outside States. Many of them are not able to afford the costs of studying outside Maharashtra.

Keeping this in mind, and the fact that the syllabus has recently changed, we will be offering B.Ed in the Marathi language for the first time in the State, through the Yashwantrao Chavan University and funds for the visually-challenged allotted by the Central Government.” The degree will be available to visually challenged students from the new academic year 2014-2015.

On the sidelines of this announcement, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan pledged his support to the cause of increasing awareness of eye donations. “India has the most numbers of visually challenged people in the world. At the same time, the numbers of people pledging their eyes must increase,” he said.

Governor receives 60 representations on Sanjay Dutt pardon

Individuals and organisations have written to the Maharashtra State Governor for or against a pardon for convicted actor Sanjay Dutt. 25 petitions oppose pardon.

While there’s been a bit of a brouhaha over whether actor Sanjay Dutt should be pardoned for his role in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Bombay, even as his jail stint of a little over three years comes up as decreed by the Supreme Court, the Governor of Maharashtra’s received and sent representations in the matter to the State Government for review.

As per a press release issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor K Sankaranarayanan’s official residence in Mumbai, the Governor has received and now sent 60 representations and petitions received by him from various individuals and organisations both seeking and opposing clemency for Sanjay Dutt. The petitions and representations have been sent for review to the State Home Department.

In a letter dated April 4, 2013 addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Maharashtra, Home Department, the Secretary to the Governor Vikas Chandra Rastogi has sent copies of all the representations received by the Governor during the last few days to the State Government.

The Governor had received representations on this issue from citizens and organisations from all parts of the country. These include those sent by Justice (retd) Markandeya Katju, Chairman, Press Council of India, and others. Earlier the Governor had sent the petition received from politicians Amar Singh and Jaya Prada, MP, to the State Home Department on March 28, 2013.

Interestingly, at least 25 individuals and organisations from out of the 60 petitioners have opposed pardon for Sanjay Dutt.

Iran wants to do business with India

Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Ali Ardashir Lajirani, wants India to throw its doors open for Iranian students and businesses.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Ali Ardashir Larijani visited the Governor of Maharashtra K Sankarnarayanan at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, today. During the visit, he said that business leaders from Iran were keen to further develop business and trade contacts with India, and expressed the hope that India would provide opportunities for Iranian business leaders to explore its business potential.

Stressing the need for greater academic collaboration between the two countries, he said that addressing small issues like expediting issuance of student visas by India would help more students from Iran to study in India.

Complimenting India for achieving significant progress in various areas during the last few years, Larijani said, “The Parliament of Iran is determined to enhance and facilitate relations with India so that the trade between the two nations will further increase from the current $15 billion.” He said that trade can be enhanced by increasing cooperation in areas like energy resources and industries.

The Speaker was accompanied by a large delegation of Parliamentarians and Ministers and is currently on a visit to India.

He added, “Social, cultural, educational and trade relations between Iran and India are deeply rooted in history and both the nations have influenced the cultures of each other during these contacts.” He said that the people of the East such as Iran and India have a lot of commonalities such as morality, ethics and family values.

New stamp commemorates late Aditya Birla

State Governor released the stamp in the presence of the Birla family; slammed other family-run businesses for lack of ethics.

The Governor of Maharashtra, K Sankaranarayanan yesterday released a commemorative postage stamp on late industrialist Aditya Birla. The function was held at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, in the presence of other prominent Birla family members such as Kumarmangalam Birla, Neeraja Birla and Rajashree Birla, among others. The Post Master General of India was also present on the occasion.

In his speech, the Governor said, “Only five days ago, the Honourable President of India had released the commemorative stamp on late Shri Aditya Birla at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. I am happy that we are celebrating the occasion here in Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. Although belatedly, I am glad that we are honouring one of the greatest pioneering business leaders of India late Shri Aditya Vikram Birla in a befitting manner.”

However, while praising the late business icon, the Governor slammed other businesses in India. He said, “Unlike other family-owned businesses in India, the Birla Group definitely stands out as one of the most respected business groups for two reasons. The first and foremost reason is the association and involvement of the Birlas in India’s freedom struggle. The late Shri GD Birla (Aditya Birla’s grandfather) was a close confidante of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel and many others.

The second reason why the Birla Group is a respected name is because of the integration of ethics and values by the Birla Group with business. The name Birla at once inspires trust and confidence because of the adherence of the Group to these values.”

The Governor went on to extol the virtues of the late business leader, saying that he was “a silent business revolutionary who foresaw the winds of globalisation coming to India much before others. He was not one to blame the system for the unfavourable business atmosphere prevailing in those days. He worked his way out to put Indian business on the global level as early as in 1969. He went on to set up 19 companies outside India in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Egypt. The postage stamp is a just recognition of his formidable work for the Birla Group and for the nation at large.”
