Cloudy with a chance of rainfall

Yesterday, Sunday, was an almost total washout in Mumbai – it rained long and hard for prolonged spells, and as always, the city’s transport and overall mobility was hit hard by water-logging.

The weather department predicts very heavy showers today as well.  According to the forecast put out for today by the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD), Mumbai, there will be “heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong wind speeds reaching 45 to 50 kmph in the city and suburbs.” The IMD has also cautioned the city to step out of doors only in the case of an emergency.

The heat is on

Temperatures to touch almost 40 Degrees Celsius today. Seesaw weather pattern continues, with 20 Degrees deflection in minimum, maximum temperatures.

You are right in thinking that the current weather has breached all levels of crazy. It’s very hot in the day and unexpectedly cool in the night. Today is just the fourth day of March 2013, and in these four days, the city’s experienced some terrific highs and lows in temperature.

Just yesterday, the maximum temperature touched the 39 Degrees Celsius mark – making it the third consecutive hottest March day for Mumbai ever – and dipped to 16.2 Degrees Celsius in the night. Today, too, the same pattern is expected to continue. In fact, the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) Mumbai anticipates that the maximum temperature may touch 40 Degrees while the minimum may dip to 14 Degrees, both large departures from the normal March temperatures of 33 Degrees Celsius (maximum) and 20 Degrees Celsius (minimum).

According to VK Rajeev, Director, IMD (Western region), the temperatures have risen because of an ‘anti-cyclone’ formation over the North-East Arabian Sea. For the uninitiated, an anti-cyclone is an area where high pressure winds flow in clockwise direction in the Northern hemisphere and in the anti-clockwise direction in the Southern hemisphere, thus causing temperatures to rise. Humidity levels are also affected.

Cool weather expected to hold

It’s going to hover at a pleasing 16 Degrees in the night, even as day temperatures rise to 32 Degrees. But beware of seasonal illnesses.

The weather in Mumbai has been confusing this year, to say the least. We’re now nearing the end of February, and the evenings and nights continue to be cool and nippy.

This, after a horrible four days of soaring temperatures last week, when humidity levels also rose, giving a glimpse of the kind of summer this city can expect this year.

However, minimum temperatures of 16 Degrees or lower have rarely been seen in February in Mumbai. Since the beginning of this week, from Sunday evening, to be precise, minimum temperatures dipped to about four Degrees below normal all over Mumbai. As per the bulletin for Friday and Saturday issued by the Indian Meteorology Department (Mumbai), minimum and maximum temperatures for Mumbai expected to be 17 Degree Celsius and 31 Degree Celsius respectively.

“Another western disturbance is active over Afghanistan. It will take another day or two for the system to reach India. If the wind conditions are right, then Mumbai temperatures may dip once again,” said VK Rajeev, speaking to a city newspaper yesterday.

It’s going to be a cold week

Brace yourselves and don’t pack away your sweaters. Weather department estimates that Mumbai’s current chill may last all this week.

The current chill you are experiencing in Mumbai is set to continue over the coming days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) contends that the cold breezy conditions that the city is currently facing will remain for a few days owing to cold winds blowing from the North.

In fact, minimum temperatures in the city today are expected to touch 15 Degree Celsius – that’s even lower than last night’s temperatures.

The IMD says that an extra-tropical storm has just passed over Jammu and Kashmir, bringing sudden snow and sleet rain, but though the storm has passed, the cold winds continue to blow. Another cold spell is expected to hit next week, if similar weather conditions hit J&K again. As per the IMD website, maximum temperatures recorded on Sunday were 31 Degree Celsius at Colaba and 30.8 Degree Celsius at Santacruz, while minimum temperatures were 17 Degree Celsius and 12.6 Degree Celsius respectively. No major departures are expected in prevailing weather conditions for 48 hours.

The heat is on. Again.

City’s weather seesaws yet again, with the mercury rising to 34 degree Celsius. Minimum temperatures will be 19 degree Celsius.

Don’t expect cool and pleasant mornings of last week to continue into this one. In yet another turnaround, temperatures have risen from yesterday and the city is expected to clock in a maximum temperature of 34 degree Celsius, while minimum temperatures will be in the 18 to 19 degree Celsius range.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, this forecast is applicable for the next 48 hours. However, accuweather.com, one of the world’s premier and most reliable weather monitoring systems, shows this forecast for the entire week, apart from overcast skies. However, as per graphs for Mumbai on the accuweather.com site, maximum temperatures will dip next week to hover at 32 degree Celsius, while minimum temperatures will remain largely unchanged.

Blow hot, blow cold

After a week of pleasant morning weather and night-time chills, the temperature’s rising in Mumbai. Warm weather will persist awhile.

It’s probably true what they say about Mumbai never really being very cold. However, last week and the beginning of this one brought a welcome respite both from this notion and hot mornings. Mumbai began its mornings in a cool breeze, and went to bed with the mercury dipping to as low as 15 Degrees Celsius.

For the last two days, however, the heat is on. The cold winds from the North that had made Mumbai’s weather such a delight to be in a few days ago, have all but disappeared, and have been replaced by warm easterly winds. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) contends that these warm winds have combined with low humidity levels to make temperatures in the city rise to as much as 35 Degree Celsius. Minimum temperatures recorded have been in the 24 to 22 Degree Celsius range.

What’s more, the temperatures are expected to be in the higher range this weekend, after which, another wave of cold winds may hit the city.
