The ‘Jeevan Saathi Sammelan’ is back!

Widowed, divorced or singletons over 50 years of age can participate in a marriage and live-in matchmaking event in Mumbai.

Seniors looking for love and companionship, pay attention. This is your chance to take a shot at love and friendship in your sunset years. The renowned Silver Inning Foundation, one of the country’s foremost entities working for senior citizens, is hosting its 2nd ‘Jeevan Saathi Sammelan’, a matchmaking event for marriage and live-in relationships.

All you have to do is register for the event beforehand and show up at the venue in Mumbai on December 13, 2015. The event will be held at 10 am at Dadar Cultural Centre. To register, fill out the form online (http://theseniorcitizen.in/register-here/) and send it to Silver Inning Foundation (look for address and details below).

The event is aimed at helping widowed, divorced and single men and women over 50 years of age seek love and companionship in their senior years. “We must break away from the old tradition of frowning upon our elders seeking love, and seek a new tradition of encouraging them to seek friendship and love at their age. In their advanced years, it is important for them to have a partner to share their lives with,” explains Silver Inning Foundation’s Sailesh Mishra.

The last such Sammelan, also held in Mumbai two years ago, received a staggering response with over 350 people showing up to look for partners. This time, the Foundation hopes that more people will arrive. The Metrognome is the online partner for the event.

Two women exhibit in solo shows in Mumbai

Mumbai artistes Harshada Tondwalkar and Mithu Biswas present solo painting shows in the city. Do not miss either of them.

The exhibition and painting scene is hotting up in Mumbai, and there are many shows to attend this season. Two Mumbai-based women, both of them painters, have set up solo shows in the city.

Artist Harshada Tondwalkar’s much awaited solo show ‘Krishnamay Radha’ opens today at The Leela, showcasing 12 of her artworks. An alumnus of the JJ School of Art, Harshada has been building a steady repertoire of acclaimed work over the years. She has participated in several group exhibitions with contemporary artistes, but this is her second solo showing. “The artworks are based on the mythological theme of Krishna’s escapades with his beloved Radha,” she explains.

“All of them are oil paint on canvas. The love between Radha and Krishna fascinated me and spoke to me. They were not married, they were lovers, sharing a kind of love that cannot be seen anywhere else,” she adds. Harshada has used a colourful palette, with meticulous detailing and a different story in each painting.

Meanwhile, artiste Mithu Biswas’ solo showing ‘Chasing the time’ stems from her parents admonishing her in her mithu01childhood. “They would keep saying, ‘Don’t waste time!’ but I never understood the idea of time then. I later realised how important time is in our lives. Time doesn’t wait for you, it is the most valuable resource in our lives. Through my series, I wanted to show this concept through a horse, drawing imagery of speed that cannot be reined in.”

Mithu is an alumnus of Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata and set up a permanent studio in Mumbai in 2009. Her solo show is up at Kamalnayan Bajaj Gallery, Bajaj Bhavan, Nariman Point.

Attend: Launch of ‘Rest in Peace’ by Kiran Nagarkar

The celebrated author will unveil the the third book in the Ravan and Eddie trilogy this evening at Kala Ghoda.

The phenomenal success of Ravan And Eddie after its publication in 1994 made its author Kiran Nagarkar one of India’s most celebrated literary names. He followed up this novel with Cuckold three years later, for which he won the Sahitya Akademi award.

The story of a Maratha Hindu and a Catholic boy growing up together in a Mumbai chawl, Ravan and Eddie was an incisive look into the city’s chawl life. Unrelenting in its grimness but laced with everyday humour and a generous amount of pathos, the story resonated with readers in a way that few city-based works had.

Today, Nagarkar will unveil the third book in the Ravan and Eddie trilogy – Rest in Peace. The book will be unveiled at Max Mueller Bhavan, Kala Ghoda. Actor Shabana Azmi will launch the book and read from it, while journalist Naresh Fernandes will lead a critique on the book.

The event is free and open to all. The launch starts at 6 pm, Gallerie Max Mueller.

Jazz on, Delhi!

Jazz concert this evening will not just present musicians from Manhattan, but will also talk about the history of jazz.

Delhi has the chance to get all jazzy this evening, Sunday, August 9.

Jazzaddicts bring to the national capital an evening of jazz with a ‘Back to the future’ concert headlined by Rajeev Raja (Jazz and fusion flautist) accompanied by international jazz musicians, all the way from Manhattan, New York. The concert is being organised at Qla, Delhi today, August 9, 2015. Jazzaddicts in an attempt to revive the original sounds of Jazz (sounds of foot stomping, swinging Jazz music) to which one can dance and snap one’s fingers.

This concert will combine performance with presentation, with a power point presentation that outlines the evolution of jazz from its beginning to the modern days live on stage. Rajeev Raja will present the history of jazz using a laptop and a giant screen. Meanwhile, the Manhattan musicians will perform jazz music from different eras. A band member said, “We are indebted to Jazz for the impact it has had on our development as musicians. The least we can do is spread awareness of this sublime form of music.”

Their most recent performance was to a packed house at the NCPA Experimental theatre in Mumbai. It took the audience by storm, as it was both incredibly informative and widely entertaining.

Typewriters will come to life in Mumbai

World’s leading sculpture artist Jeremy Mayer will create an unusual masterpiece using typewriter parts. Do not miss this unique live event.

Godrej Archives, the business archive of Godrej Group, in line with its philosophy ‘Restore. Reflect. Reimagine.’ is lending a new lease to its last batch of typewriters by collaborating with the world’s only known typewriter sculptor, Jeremy Mayer.

Jeremy Mayer Jeremy will treat the city art aficionados to surreal sculptures and mandalas created using parts of the typewriters. He is a renowned sculpture artist who disassembles typewriters and reassembles them into full scale, anatomically correct figures. He does not solder, weld or glue the pieces together – it is entirely a cold assembly. The artist also does not use any parts that do not come from a typewriter. This will be India’s only typewriter sculpture. The finished product will be unveiled on August 12, 2015.

After the event, Jeremy will also flag off the ‘Artist-in-residence’ programme, an initiative that encourages artists from across the globe to reinterpret 118 years of heritage so that the current and future generations are inspired to reimagine the past and build a brighter future.

Head to the Godrej Hubble, Plant 13 Annexe, Godrej & Boyce, Vikhroli (East), on Wednesday, August 12. The event takes place from 3.30 pm to 8 pm. Entry is free to all.

The pianos play for 150 years of music

Attend Con Brio 2015, a special event that celebrates 150 years of Furtados. The recital is this evening at NCPA.

An NCPA and Furtados presentation, this Western music and piano competition has been organised to celebrate 150 years of Furtados.

The special programme has been devised consisting of works for multiple pianists at multiple pianos. The programme will include highlights from past Con Brios: Glazunov’s Festive Cantata with the Paranjoti Academy Chorus, Bach’s Concerto for four keyboards with the Bombay Chamber Orchestra and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

The Paranjoti Academy Chorus and soloists will give the world premiere of the wedding scene from Vanraj Bhatia’s opera Agnivarsha. The programme will end with a special arrangement of the finale from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for chorus and 8 pianos sung collectively by several of Mumbai’s well-known choruses. The programme will feature Paul Stewart, Marialena Fernandes, Patricia Rozario, Mark Troop, Karl Lutchmayer and several others.
