Mumbai city is currently inundated with cratered roads and accompanying debris and filth. Ordinarily, too, the city has long given up the green cover it used to enjoy to large plots of land housing residential and office buildings.

So in the midst of this concrete jungle, any respite in the form of plants and flowers is surely a welcome change.

Yesterday, the Governor of Maharashtra Ch. Vidyasagar Rao inaugurated a flower and plant Show organised by ‘I Love Mumbai’ on Marine Drive, Mumbai. The exhibition houses several varieties of flowering and non-flowering plants, which are on sale as well. The showing is on till January 17, 2015.

Ch Vinodha, wife of the Governor, Nana Chudasama, Founder of ‘I Love Mumbai’, Shaina NC and Sardar Tara Singh, MLA were among those present on the occasion.

Head to the plant and flower show at Service Road outside Wilson Gymkhana, next to Taraporewala aquarium, Marine Drive, Mumbai.

Maharashtra’s done well for its people: UNICEF

However, as per the State of the World’s Children Report, State needs to redouble efforts to prevent crimes against women.

This year happens to be the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Child.  The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the United Nations’ General Assembly on November 20, 1989 and came into force on September 2, 1990. As per the UNICEF’s report ‘State of the World’s Children’ released in Mumbai last week, Maharashtra State has done well on the fronts of the handwash campaign for school children, as also reaching its Millenium Development Goals (MDG) for Under-5 years mortality and Maternal Mortality Rate.

The report was launched by the State Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. On the occasion, the Governor called upon UNICEF, Maharashtra to reach out to the State’s poor children through its various programmes and to serve as a bridge between the Government of Maharashtra and the people.

Expressing concern over the killing of girl child and the practice of sex-determination, the Governor called for counselling of doctors who were conducting sex-determination tests. Complimenting the UNICEF Maharashtra for making significant gains in Health, Nutrition, Education and Child Protection in Maharashtra, the Governor lauded its efforts in implementing the handwash campaign for school children in rural areas of Maharashtra. The Governor called for making the campaign broad-based by including students who are outside the school system.

Said Rajeshwari Chandrashekhar, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Maharashtra, “Maharashtra reached the MDG for Maternal Mortality Rate in 2010 (87) which is lower than the national average of 178. Further, Maharashtra has reached the MDG for Under-5 Mortality in 2009 (28), which is lower than national average (52).”

Some of the highlights of the UNICEF State of the World’s Children Report for Maharashtra:

  • State reached MDG for drinking water in 2003.
  • 30 per cent of open defecation-free villages in India are in Maharashtra
  • Increase in literacy rate from 77 per cent to 83 per cent between 2001 and 2011: rate higher than the national average
  • Performance of students in both language and Math significantly above the national average
  • Three-fold jump in the number of RTE compliant schools (from 7,355 schools in 2013 to 23,148 in 2013)
  • Child marriage decline from 31 per cent to 12 per cent (from 1998 to 2013)

Mantralaya, Raj Bhavan join ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan’

Maharashtra Governor flags off national cleanliness drive in Maharashtra starting from two of its most prominent administrative buildings; more follow.

The Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao yesterday launched a cleanliness drive at Mantralaya and Raj Bhavan as part of the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyaan. The Governor was accompanied by Advisor Anil Baijal, Chief Secretary Swadheen Kshatriya, Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte and others, who cleaned a part of the Mantralaya to mark the formal beginning of the campaign. The Governor, accompanied by his wife Vinodha, launched a similar drive involving his staff at Raj Bhavan.

Speaking to journalists at Raj Bhavan, the Governor announced the appointment of nine eminent personalities as honorary ambassadors for the Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan in the State. They include renowned spiritual leader Shri Dattatreya Narayan aka Appasaheb Dharmadhikari, film actor Abhishek Bachchan, Nita Ambani, Rajashree Birla, singer Sunidhi Chauhan, popular Marathi actor Makrand Anaspure, ace shooter Anjali Bhagwat, Monika More (who lost both her arms in a train accident recently) and Tushar Gandhi.

The Governor said, “In his Independence Day Speech, the Hon’ble Prime Minister has laid considerable stress on making our cities, towns, villages, schools, temples and public places clean. He has also laid stress on sanitation and provision of separate toilets for girls in all schools.

“I do feel that a lot needs to be done, both in the city of Mumbai and in Maharashtra to emerge as the cleanest State in the country. Maharashtra has made pioneering efforts in the cleanliness campaign in the form of the Sant Gadge Baba Abhiyan. We have to give a major impetus to the campaign under the leadership of the Prime Minister. We have to focus on public places, beginning with Railway Stations, Hospitals, Offices, market places and so on. I am visiting the Sir JJ Hospital on October 18 as part of the campaign. Sensitising children is also a part of the campaign, and I have asked the Secretary of School Education to draw up a plan to create awareness among children about the Swachchata Abhiyaan.”
